Classic Banana Bread
Moist, golden, perfectly sweet — and made with ingredients you already have. This is the banana bread recipe everyone asks for.
This is the recipe I make when I have bananas going brown on the counter and I don't want to waste them. Three bananas, a bowl, and about an hour later — the whole house smells like Sunday morning. My family can't let it cool before they're slicing into it. I hope yours can't either.

Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas, mashed
- ⅓ cup melted butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp baking soda
- Pinch of salt
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or chocolate chips
Instructions
Preheat & Prepare
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
Mash the Bananas
In a large mixing bowl, mash the 3 ripe bananas with a fork until smooth. A few small lumps are perfectly fine — they add texture and flavor.
Mix the Wet Ingredients
Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas. Mix in the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Add the Dry Ingredients
Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and stir. Add the flour and fold gently until just combined. Do not overmix — a few streaks of flour are okay. Overmixing makes the bread tough.
Add Your Extras
If using walnuts or chocolate chips, fold them in now. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
Bake
Bake for 55 to 65 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top starts browning too quickly, loosely tent it with foil after 40 minutes.
Cool & Slice
Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack. Try to let it cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing — if your family will let you. 😄
Blu's Tips
Riper is Better
The blacker the banana the sweeter and more flavorful your bread. Don't throw away overripe bananas — they're perfect for this.
Don't Overmix
Once you add the flour stir gently. Overmixing develops gluten and makes your bread dense and tough instead of light and tender.
Chocolate Chips Win
Add half a cup of chocolate chips to the batter before baking. Your kids will never ask for any other version again.
Check Early
Every oven is different. Start checking at 55 minutes. A toothpick in the center should come out clean with just a few moist crumbs.
