Pumpkin bread is one of those recipes that makes the whole house smell like fall. It works any time of year but there is something about a cool morning and a warm slice of this that just feels right. Make two loaves — one to keep and one to give away.

Wet
Pumpkin puree1 cup
Vegetable oil½ cup
Eggs2
Water⅓ cup
Vanilla extract1 tsp
Dry
All-purpose flour1½ cups
Sugar1½ cups
Baking soda1 tsp
Salt½ tsp
Cinnamon1 tsp
Nutmeg½ tsp
Cloves¼ tsp

Preheat and Prep
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x5 loaf pan well and set aside.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Mix Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl whisk together pumpkin puree, oil, eggs, water, and vanilla until smooth.

Combine
Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold together until just combined. A few lumps are fine. Do not overmix.

Bake
Pour batter into loaf pan. Bake 60 to 70 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Check at 60 minutes.

Cool Before Slicing
Cool in pan 10 minutes then transfer to a rack. Cool completely before slicing — at least 30 minutes.

Use Pure Pumpkin
Make sure you use pure pumpkin puree — not pumpkin pie filling. Pie filling has added sugar and spices and will throw off the whole recipe.

This recipe doubles easily. Make two — one for your family and one to give away. Pumpkin bread is always a welcome gift.

Add Extras
Fold in chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, or raisins for extra texture and flavor. A sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on top before baking is beautiful too.

Like most quick breads pumpkin bread gets even more moist and flavorful on day two. Make it the night before if you can wait.
