Sweet potato pie is the pie that Southern grandmothers have been making since before anyone can remember. It is smoother and richer than pumpkin pie with a natural sweetness that comes from the sweet potatoes themselves. If you have never had a slice you owe it to yourself.

Sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed2 cups
Butter, softened¼ cup
Sugar¾ cup
Eggs2
Evaporated milk½ cup
Vanilla extract1 tsp
Cinnamon1 tsp
Nutmeg½ tsp
Salt¼ tsp

9-inch pie crust1

Instructions

Step by step

Cook the Sweet Potatoes
Boil or bake sweet potatoes until completely tender. Peel and mash until completely smooth with no lumps.

Preheat the Oven
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges.

Make the Filling
Beat together mashed sweet potatoes and softened butter until smooth. Add sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla, and all spices. Mix until completely combined.

Fill and Bake
Pour filling into unbaked crust. Bake 50 to 55 minutes until edges are set and center has just a slight jiggle.

Cool completely on a wire rack — at least 2 hours. Serve at room temperature or chilled with whipped cream.

Bake Don't Boil
Baking sweet potatoes instead of boiling gives you a drier more concentrated flavor. Wrap in foil and bake at 400 degrees for an hour.

Beat Until Silky
The smoother your sweet potato filling the better your pie. Use a hand mixer to get it completely lump free before adding the other ingredients.

Make it the Day Before
Like most custard pies sweet potato pie tastes even better the next day. Make it ahead and refrigerate overnight.

Serve with Whipped Cream
A generous dollop of freshly whipped cream on each slice is the only proper way to serve sweet potato pie.
